Anesthesia, Sedation, and Pre-Surgical Evaluations

Veterinary medicine often requires the use of anesthesia or sedation. Pet owners concerned about the risks associated with anesthesia, particularly with an older pet can be rest assured that Lawrence Veterinary Hospital’s highly trained team of medical professionals is fully equipped to offer your pet the highest standard of care. Our Registered Veterinary Technicians assist our Doctors and will monitor your pet every step of the way, to help ensure your pet’s safety.

Prior to any sedation or anesthetic procedure, Lawrence Veterinary Hospital provides a physical exam and laboratory test for your pet to enable the Doctors to screen for potential problems or risks before any sedation or anesthesia is administered. To provide the best anesthetic plan prior to surgery, in particular for geriatric pets, ill pets, or pets with chronic diseases, blood tests, electrocardiograms, or x-rays may be given to provide vital information to the Doctors. For all pets undergoing general anesthesia, an IV catheter will be placed to help keep blood pressure normal, to keep your pet hydrated, and allow for any emergency medications need to be administered. We take every step to ensure the safety of your pet. Your pet’s Doctor will discuss any associated risks with you and create an individualized anesthetic plan for your pet and will always try to answer your questions.
